The Helsinki Medical Imaging Centre has signed a contract with GE Healthcare to implement a multi-site Picture Archiving and Communications System across the hospital district of Helsinki and Uusimaa.

The new system, Centricity PACS, will help to connect all imaging units throughout the district through a secure, encrypted digital portal.

It will provide integrated ultrasound, mammography and orthopaedic tools with second opinion consulting over a low bandwidth. The system will also allow external users, such as referring doctors, to gain access to the same data, images, reports and tools as those at the hospital site.

Mika Koivikko, project manager at Töölö Hospital, said: “Imaging and image distribution have to work in any clinical environment. That’s why during PACS acquisition we specifically paid attention for applications and image distribution from the clinician’s point of view.

“In addition, HUS-Röntgen was looking for a partner, who is able to deliver the required technology, know-how and proven reliability. With the new PACS we now have a suitable and practical solution and system maintenance is not binding too much resource.”

The HUS district is the largest hospital district in Finland covering more than 30% of the population. More than 160 radiologists and thousands of PACS using clinicians work at the HUS to produce almost one million radiology exams each year.

Juergen Reyinger, vice president and general manager at GE Healthcare IT EMEA. “We are very happy to connect the HUS healthcare providers to a joint platform from where they can manage, retrieve, exchange and store patient images throughout the whole region.

“The full IT package that will be installed there will on the one hand, help to increase access and save costs and on the other hand, will speed up workflows and ensure higher efficiency. In the end this will be to the benefit of medical staff and the local population alike.”
